Actually bioterrorism preparedness is in the same "joke" category as pandemic preparedness. However, the real clue as to how bad things really are come from comments on the real case fatality rate

Well of course it is good to be calm and peaceful and not get too worked up about everything that is going on today. You would go mad if you took on every issue. It is easy to feel overwhelmed.

My experience of finding out about factory farming practices made me think, and I could not go back to eating meat just because of how the animals suffer. I am sure other people are quite different. Some people discover an uncomfortable fact but manage to bury their heads in the sand once again.

For anyone still interested in finding more out about how pigs are treated on factory farms, here is another excellent site:

But there are other arguments to be made against eating meat as well. It is very hard on the environment and causes enormous amounts of pollution. And it is unhealthy! Do you want to eat something that has been produced this way? What I am trying to say is forget the suffering the animal goes through--do you want to eat a diseased, contaminated product full of growth hormones that is known to raise your risk for heart disease and cancer? Could this possibly be healthful living?

"Pigs are born and raised inside buildings that have automated water, feed and waste removal. They don't see daylight until they are shipped for slaughter. Dust, dirt and toxic gases from the pigs' waste create an unsanitary environment that encourages the onset of a number of diseases and illnesses, including pneumonia, cholera, dysentery and trichinosis."
