Elroy, while I don't disagree with you on your broader topic, rape for the most part has very little to do with sex other than the obvious. It is, for the most part an expression of aggression and dominance, the sex is pretty low on the list.

If that were true (I don't claim to be any expert on rape), then it would seem at least 1 in 20 women in the military would have been beaten up by their peers, since that is a more common expression of aggression. Actually, I'll bet you could figure out the level of relationship between societal sexual repression and rape by comparing rape statistics of "puritanical" countries like the USA and countries that are more sexually liberal, like Thailand or France. Don't know what you'd find.

While rape, esp. violent gang rape, does often have non-sexual motivations I disagree with the statement that it "has very little to do with sex other than the obvious.". Even when the other motivations are part of the deal there is often sexual motivation. For some dominance is itself a sexual turn on. They are exhibiting dominance for sexual gratification as much as they are using sex to establish dominance.

I suspect that the majority of rapes in the military are not gang rapes but rather one on one rapes, often date rapes, often with alcohol and mixed signals involved. These are also crimes, and may also have elements of dominance and violence, but are probably more sexually motivated. Also I suspect that the overall rate of rape is probably lower in the military than on many college campuses.
