I think for anyone who is self-employed or owns a small business, it is in your own interest to shop at local independent stores.

If you own a small business, Wal-mart is never going to be a customer of yours, and even if it were they would use their position to cut your margins to the bone. A local retailer, on the other hand, may someday become your customer. So one hand washes the other.

One of the best things we can do for our own communities is to buy local whenever possible. Make it a point to patronize merchants and firms that are owned by local people. There are many benefits to this.. for example, being able to talk directly to an owner if a problem comes up. It can be challenging to find what you need however since multinationals have taken over such a large chunk of the economy.
But when you consider that a higher percentage of your dollars goes back into the local community..local taxes, local charities, local churches, neighborhood schools and other locally owned firms, it is a good investment.
We have several locally owned restaurants that are excellent, and often the owners are right there chatting with you. Also there are often locally owned movie theatres. Our local theatres have lower prices and better popcorn than the mega-chains.
We don't hear much about the virtues of buying local because most media make their money off the multinationsl chains. They're not going to go out of their way to promote localism. Unless of course the TV or radio station or newspaper happens to be owned locally. Then you often see a difference in what they promote and cover.
