Taiwan is indeed a matter of principle -- and the principle is national sovereignty. It is a no brainer. China is doing nothing more than defending its sovereignty over Taiwan -- and on this there will never be ANY compromise. To China there is no issue that even comes close to this in importance. To watch us act like we are going to stop Europe from helping arm China to exercise control of Taiwan is enormously helpful in bonding Europe and China and leaving us out in the cold. Perhaps next time we want to invade a country and turn once again to China to lend us the money to do so, as they did for Iraq, they might say no.
