I have always felt that "people conform to an accepted norm" because of having role models that establish the standard. My grandparents were eccentric, I have been told their parents were more eccentric. They lived in "gallop by" country and then "wave as you steam by" country, just as I live in "fly over" country.

IMO the drastic reduction of eccentric behavior started with the generation of people who grew up with movies, and accelerated with the TV generation.

Now liberal types have granted moral leadership by antisocial thugs, and that is sure to cause great harm to our society. I would argue that some of these people are living role models for what we would consider eccentric behavior if practiced individually. Others are just trying to differentiate themselves and using destructive behavior to achieve their ends.

In summary, my point was that I do not think that I have a right to require people to conform to my accepted norm. Compulsion by ostracism is the essential element of Authoritarian Liberalism. We do not wish to be forced to conform to standards which we do not agree with.
