"Conservative" in the sense of "resisting change", does not equal the same thing as politically conservative. Otherwise you would have to call liberals "conservative" for resisting tax cuts or social security reform. To the extent that politically conservative does imply resistance to change, it is resistance to change in regards to traditions that have a long and deep history in a particuarly society.

Racism had a long and deep history in the South. Is that why Southern conservatives were opposed to freeing the slaves?

You don't have to be conservative to appreciate a culture's traditions such as halloween or Thanksgiving. However, its such 'traditions' as slavery and discrimination or an aversion to AA where the conservative doctrine is a millstone around our necks.

Exactly. Which is why I say from Stalin on. There was enough time from Marx to Stalin enabling ideology to solidify. Pol Pot would need a quadrant all to himself I'm afraid.

Old liberals also become "conservative" in the "fixed in their ways" sense. We are seeing this now with the 60's crowd and PC issues in general. Both offered something at one point, but times move on, while some individuals don't. Tax cuts and SS "reform" are of course issues which have many pros and cons, so I would not necessarily attach a liberal or conservative label to views on that.
