I 100% agree. The war on drugs has been an expensive failure. In ways its created a curious attraction in our youth. I know it did for me and yes, I tried and used various drugs. Having said that I really did come from a family of strong moral convictions even though things weren't always "perfect" for my parents. But today I see children being born to people who aren't qualified to own pets, let alone have and guide children. These children eventually end up sitting next to my son for 40 hours per week in School. As a result it is more important than ever for my to impress upon my 6 year old son that drug abuse is a road to hell. The day will come when "daddy" isn't quite as cool and influential as those peers that come from rudderless homes. It is at that point that we as parents can only hope and pray that the values we taught early on makes sure the apple (our kids) don't fall far from the tree. I know they will fall and make mistakes - thats a given. But the lessons learned from we parents can have a profound effect on how far they fall and how quickly the get back on their feet, dust themselves off and move forward in life. Legal drugs are no different than legal booze or legal guns. Ultimately the user determines if they are going to legally use in moderation or fail when they have the responsibility in their hands. Guns, drugs and booze can all kill.....some just take longer to finish you off. How and if they are used responsibly will be determined by the owner. All we can do as a society is educate and lightly control (through taxes etc.) if we truly want to be a society that still offers freedom of choice.
