Folks need a nest egg.

Then seek policies that encourage saving and discourage consumption, like personal accounts in social security.
Don't worry about trashing the economy, that is a short cycle issue.

Yep, from that perspective, with an annual individual income of $30K, (I'm single so dont know the effect of other variables), it is possible to save (whether SS, or other mechanisms), and spend like an average consumer, PROVIDED one lays the savings plans in place, well ahead of the spending impulses.
