Is that really what all the fuss is about, whether a gay union can use the word "marriage" instead of the word "union"? Somehow, I don't think so. I think there are lots of legal benefits and obligations and tax ramifications and inheritance issues that apply to a marriage, but don't apply to a "gay unions", but I could be wrong.

Exactly. Redefining the term would effectively redefine centurites of existing law, overnight, undoing what courts and congresses have done since the inception of the country. Even further back, into the Common Law.

If there needs to be a gay union, fine. If some rights need to be afforded gay unions, fine. But nobody in their right mind (other than gays) would suggest they should be declared identical to a marriage. The thought is really quite idiotic.

Tax ramifications and benefits and such should be decided by congress and by state legislatures, not by courts deciding to redifine terms to mean something different than what long standing laws in every state and federal laws, and centuries of legal tradition and common law hold them to mean.

I'd prefer the term marriage not be used for these unions but I can live with it if there is a strong enough push in the political process to change the law in states and at the federal level.
