Who is "we?" This is a personal choice. Indeed, it is a personal. By "we" I meant our society. There are lots of things that are personal choices where society would prefer a certain choice, encourage a certain choice. We try to encourage honesty, good parenting, service to the country, safe driving, hard work, and the like, or at least not discourage them, because they make for a better society. And because the rest of us could get stuck with the cost of other people's bad choices. We make a point of honoring these things every now and then to reinforce the practice and we avoid dismissing or disparaging them. So should it be for saving, IMO. I'm glad that you chose to save. That's good for both of us.
