I think you were speaking figuratively, but if people did one small thing while they are still working and made sure they didn't have a mortgage to worry about in their retirement many problems would be solved Yes, I was speaking figuratively, but I agree with you that paying off the mortgage before retirement is a wise choice. BTW: In your opinion, what is "responsible?" IMO, "responsible" means making sure you don't become a burden on anyone, particularly the taxpayers.
