I agree, there's no reason to do that.

Mine was a broad-brush statement in response to a broad-brush statement. I had in mind that one shouldn't retire as long as one needed the salary to meet the mortgage payments, not necessarily making it a rule to pay off the mortgage before retirement, although that's what I said. One should risk losing one's home after retirement when it's harder to recover.

Why not let the money work for you in other investments and deduct the mortgage interest on tax returns.

Because there is risk in investments and little risk in real estate.

I spent way too much time trying to see if your statement is correct by using some a calculator which I link below. I realized two things: it's complex and I'm no good with numbers.

One thing I am good at, though, is in asking questions. I am not convinced that your statement is correct but admit that an apples to apples comparison is best left to the experts.
