It really makes no difference what you eat if you are stuffing yourself six times a day. I know a lot of fat vegetarians.

he thought he could overcome them by running...

he didn't

he died running

that said

he did the best he could with a deck that was stacked against him

and died doing what he loved

otoh

pritikin committed suicide as he realized his dietary regimen would not prevent or cure his genetic propensity toward cancer

Jim Fixx had a very high cholesterol rating and ate a junk food diet. Running at the intensity he did can also be dangerous in that it stresses the heart. Because his father died early of heart disease, he may have overcompensated and did exactly the wrong things to prevent such an outcome for himself:
