Why The Silence About Condoleezza's Accountability for the Iraq Disaster?
By Bob Kendall
02/18/05

When President George Bush was recently asked by the European press about “accountability” for what happened and is continuing to occur in Iraq, he had a simple answer, “Well they voted for me for a second term, didn’t they?”

The accountability for rewarding an Administration with leadership like Bush and Dr. Rice provide has been such a disastrous failure in so many respects during their frightful rule that one might well ask, “What about accountability?”

The answer is a double-edged sword – both Republicans and Democrats can be held accountable. There are Republicans refusing to believe there were no weapons of mass destruction, with the Bush Administration originally used to justify the headlong rush into war against Iraq. The Democratic leadership soft-pedaled any criticism. The message of Howard Dean might have been the message of any legitimate Democratic challenger. Perhaps some thinking voters would have awakened from their delusions that prompted them to vote for “four more years” had Dean been able to articulate his message as Democratic presidential nominee.

With the Greenhouse Effect making icebergs in Alaska and with our cities polluted, as the U.S. contribution to global warming is the highest of any nation, does it therefore make sense to refuse to go to the Kyoto Conference on stemming pollution? Does it make sense to abandon hard fought treaties that lessen the threat of nuclear war? What kind of mentality can overlook American soldiers being killed and injured? What kind of human being can ignore a hundred thousand estimated Iraqi dead? Only God knows how many are injured! What individual in his right mind can fantasize to such an extent as to imagine that killing people and demolishing cities in Iraq can achieve peace?

Yes, there is accountability you Republican voters and Democratic soft pedal apologists for the Bush gang, now you have failed Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to continue a frightening journey into death and destruction. She had no idea of what the enemy would do before 9/11, so she claims. This claim is absurd in the light of all the warnings. Now with Bush boasting about dismantling Social Security and cutting down on medical care and welfare with approximately 75 percent of Americans in retirement using Social Security as their primary income source, why must they be held hostage to any extent by Wall Street? Wake up America before it is too late!

The welfare rolls will inevitably increase if Bush succeeds in directing Social Security funding to the Wall Street boys. It will begin with only a 2 percent diversion. Anything for Wall Street to get its foot in the door, and then climb year by year, with naïve Yuppies fantasizing that great wealth awaits them. No way, the wealth awaits the Wall Street tycoons.

Finally the question must be asked, “How many service personnel must die before the Iraq War is over?” God forbid, but preventive war continues to be a Bush Administration policy. As Bush mouths his desire to bring democracy and freedom all over the world, the question must be asked, “How will the unfulfilled fantasy of changing the whole world to embrace Bush’s vision of freedom ultimately impact on U.S. citizens?”

Does that mean we are now slated to wage war against any nation that Bush and his likeminded robots decide the U.S. should confront? An old cliché says, “Charity begins at home!” Voters should be warned that the parade of horribles during Bush’s first term will undoubtedly continue, along with a parade of atrocious appointments. Not only should we invoke God bless America, but “God help America!”
