I wish *all* computer systems (laptops, as well as desktops) came with a standard noise measurement for idle and load. Preferably given as a description and not just in dB(A). Most people here probably know and understand the log nature of the dB scale, but "average Joe" (cough) doesn't. There aren't many good, descriptive terms out there, but I did manage to find the following: Sensation of complete silence 0-20 dB Slight rustling of leaves 30 dB Calm urban areas in cities between 2:00 and 4:00 a.m. 40 dB Normal indoor conversation 50 dB Passenger car idling 50 dB Passenger car (50 km/hr) 60-80 dB Truck 50 km/h 78-92 dB Motorcycle 50 (km/hr) 75-100 dB Train 100 km/h 100 dB Discotheque 85-103 dB Peak-level high speed train 300 (km/hr) 110 dB Jet airplane take off 110 dB Military, low-level fights 105-120 dB Hearing damage possible 120-140 dB (source: greenpack.rec.org ) Wikipedia provides this list:0 Threshold of hearing (human with good ears) 10 Human breathing at 3 m 20 Rustling of leaves 30 Theatre 40 Residential area at night 50 Quiet restaurant 60 Office or restaurant 70 Busy traffic 80 Vacuum cleaner at 1 m, kerbside of busy street 90 Loud factory, heavy lorries at 1 m 100 Pneumatic hammer at 2 m; inside disco 110 Accelerating motorcycle at 5 m; chainsaw at 1 m 120 Rock concert; jet aircraft taking off at 100 m 130 Threshold of pain 150 Jet engine at 30 m 180 Rocket engine at 30 m With a standardized method of measuring the noise level (say 2 feet from the "front"), this would be very valuable information when buying a computer (on-line, especially, but even in a store, it's practically impossible to get any idea of how noisy a system is). In the end, anything would be better than status quo - and with 60-70W less in total system power consumption, one would assume AMD would benefit from such a shift. -fyo
