My connection is family, too.

My maternal grandparents and assorted relatives moved there from New Orleans sometime before WWII. As I recall the impetus was to seek a dry climate for health reasons.

I used to visit family in those tiny towns scattered east of El Paso. One of my uncles was deputy sheriff of Hudspeth for years and years. He wore a Stetson and a pair of Tony Lamas, and a gunbelt, of course. Chewed Beechnut tobacco. His first name was Cowboy. They don't make very many of them like that anymore.
