Vanguard closed it's one and only precious metals fund because it was getting too scary for them, and then later I was kicked out because they said my 403b wasn't supposed to have let buy those shares in the first place. It still shows up online as one of the funds I can buy, although if I try, it rejects it. Clowns...

I worked for a mutual fund co. that did something similar. They had a venerable fund called The Science Fund, that had beaten the market and its competition regularly since the 1950s, with brilliant managers like Ming Li and Hank Hermann. At the top of the energy market in the very early 80s, they changed the name to the Science and Energy Fund. At the bottom of the Energy market, they switched it back to the Science Fund. More recently, they renamed it The Science and Technology Fund, just before the 2000 crash of tech stocks. Now that wasn't as big a deal as Science and Technology funds have very similar holdings. Still, the timing was poor.
