Andrew Jackson was not a good man nor a good president (War of 1812). Yet he is revered as one of the great heroes of American folk lore, so I say with some caution, he was a cut throat pirate who betrayed his allies.

Trail of tears: Davy Crocket was a congressman and another American folk hero of the frontier had this to say, ""I would sooner be honestly damned than hypocritically immortalized." He opposed the removal of the Cherokee people, which cost him his political career.

The Legend of the Cherokee Rose.

"No better symbol exists of the pain and suffering of the Trail Where They Cried than the Cherokee Rose(pictured at top of page). The mothers of the Cherokee grieved so much that the chiefs prayed for a sign to lift the mother's spirits and give them strength to care for their children. From that day forward, a beautiful new flower, a rose, grew wherever a mother's tear fell to the ground. The rose is white, for the mother's tears. It has a gold center, for the gold taken from the Cherokee lands, and seven leaves on each stem that represent the seven Cherokee clans that made the journey. To this day, the Cherokee Rose prospers along the route of the "Trail of Tears". The Cherokee Rose is now the official flower of the State of Georgia."

"Another issue is the Alberta beef / mad cow case, where the US has stopped the import of beef because of a case of mad cow, and is slow to reopen the border"

This is a dumb issue for the US to battle. The disease was found in a dairy cow and the cause was idiosyncratic enough that it is unlikely to occur again even in dairy cows. The ban on Canadian beef is wacko. It is based on the fears of the uneducated masses. Easy thing to fix since everyone is sitting in front of TV. Tell them.

The soft lumber issue is more complicated since it is based on competition in a major industry (in some regions, the only industry) in the North West USA.

"Canadians generally have more progressive attitudes than most Americans, so it is little surprise that Canadians find American views on the welfare state, feminism, abortion, capital punishment, relations with Cuba, the environment, same-sex rights, the war on drugs, immigration, the Star Wars program, and the war in Iraq as either extremely conservative, or an overreaction."

During the late 60s and early 70s Canada became an attractive alternative for young people in the USA who were anti-establishment lefties. Now I am seeing lots of young Canadians coming here who seem to be conservatives. These trends seem to reinforce divisiveness on issues. I don't think this is a healthy way to relocate people because it leads to extremism and bigotry on both sides.
