That's the sorriest apology for "compassionate conservatism" I've ever seen, suggesting that religious organizations deserve federal dollars to make sure social workers don't engage in marxist indoctrination of the underclass. What a joke! What "drives" Bush is not compassion, it's Grover Norquist's mantra to shrink the size of government until "it can be drowned in a bathtub." And as for holding schools accountable, did you happen to notice that a bipartisan ad hoc commission composed of state legislators (mainly republicans) from more than half the states in this country have submitted a report to the feds claiming No Child Left Behind is discriminatory, unjust and illegal? Never mind the fact that the actual proposals for Bush's "fix" of SS go far beyond and cost way more than what might be necessary. Now we are also witnessing the liars who brought us the swift boat campaign gearing up to savage the AARP. Compassionate, indeed!
