Yes, correct. I'm pleased you continued with my line of reasoning. On the basis that only about 47% were identifiable by DNA there would have been something like 3,900 total victims.

Of course, all of this leads to two outstanding questions (apart from the one about the 700 or 1,200 missing people):

a) Why did the authorities try to minimize the extent of the human disaster at the WTC? One can hardly blame the journalists for the incomplete arithmetic. We know their position was just to pander to the establishment and print as they were told. As far as researchers are concerned, I guess they didn't think about it.

b) By what mechanism did the remains of half of the missing people simply vanish without a trace? We are talking over 2,000 bodies -- pouf!! And one must remember that they could all not have been incinerated because the fire was on only one ot two floors and also that the firemen were wearing heat-protective clothes.

I can offer an answer to the second question, but not the first.
