The major problem with a marginalized Democratic party is the danger of what happens if the Republicans pull a "Nixon" and go out of office disgraced. This could happen in the future. If it does, and the Dems are a mess, we run the risk of getting another "Jimmy Carter" as President, and we can't afford that.

So it's a balancing act. The harder the Dems have it, the angrier they will grow. Not good for the country. I hope the moderate Dems can win out.
