Been there, done that.

Start early...it takes a while, but it is liberating.

I didn't feel completely free until I realized most of my SF stuff collected during 11 years overseas would likely end up in a dump, so I gave it to two museums in NC.

And it wasn't easy to decide to dispose of most of the gun collection, but I have to admit, now that they are gone, I don't miss any of the guns. Of course I did keep enough for adequate self defense and occasional hunting or shooting fun.

My hang up now is an extensive collection of antique fishing reels, lures, etc. I gave my kids what they wanted and still have several boxes of stuff. I just learned ebay buyers love old fishing stuff and I may give them a chance to prove it soon.

My wife decided to keep the 1800s glassware she collected and disposed of newer stuff. We now actually drink from the old glassware nearly every evening.
