I didn't say the whole Middle East will be democratic in 10 years. On the contrary, I've said that democratization takes alot of time. However, you and John are the ones who have wanted us to pull out of Iraq without finishing the job. It is just starting to bear fruit now. We have a long ways to go and we should stay the course.

I said to use economic carrots to get countries to turn around........like the EU is doing.

This approach is definitely going to fail. With authoritarian regimes, economic carrots only makes the regime more secure and LESS likely to transfer power. The stick approach is much more effective, especially when you have as big a stick as the US has.

Its human nature, bad people need to be punished for their misbehavior, not rewarded.
