Yes, the demographic time bomb is very real. Unfortunately, it seems that the most radical people (on both sides of the confrontations in the Middle East) are the ones having the most kids. The enemy here is largely religious fundamentalism... the way to diffuse this is fostering free political systems in an atmosphere of economic opportunity. Unfortunately, the US has not bought itself a lot of credibility and goodwill in the Middle East. Its actions have obviously been tainted by motivations that go beyond a humanitarian pursuit of the best interests of the people in the region, and have not bought genuine cooperation. If the US's approach had been far less military stick and far more carrot in the form of economic assistance (tied to democratic reforms), I think that we could see a lot more stability in the Middle East. Terrorism and religious fanaticism would be dying out rather than growing. The reality is that the US devastated Iraq with bombing, and prior to that economic sanctions -- bringing it to a third world level where fanatacism breeds, when twenty years earlier it had been one of the most advanced and sophisticated of the Arab countries.
