You assume he could do whatever he wanted when he took over. Don't turn into mindmeld! I never wrote that. He's been in power 5 years, and Syria is a non-democratic, terrorist harboring, Lebanon occupying, basket case. It's not that hard to spend 1-3 years solidifying power, then announce your 5 year plan to be the first democratic Arab country in the ME. He would have gotten BILLIONS in carrots! Instead, his main accomplishment is placing 4th in the Axis of Evil competition...
