Ray > Many people seem to use << or >> or something similar to convey differing authorship. This has always been a source of confusion for me. That's why I prefer to use the easy and clearly understood HTML tools that are readily available on SI, so as to avoid confusion. :)

It's precisely because I wish to avoid using the HTML codes which SI provides that I use >> at the beginning of a quote and << at the end. In fact, because >> and << are the reverse of the standard HTML tags, the HTML interpreter will not try to parse them. The reason I don't use the HTML codes provided is because, as far as I am aware, there are only two -- italics and bold -- which one can use to highlight text. All the other codes SI has stripped from the full HTML "vocabulary".

I like to use italics for text I want to emphasize but I find the bold, like capitals, too "screaming", although sometimes I do use it if there is something very special I want to draw the reader's attention to. You will also note that I use a single > at the beginning of a sentence or paragraph to refer to a passage I wish to quote from a previous post.

These are my own grammatical conventions, as is always addressing the person to whom I am writing at the beginning of the post, and I have used them consistently for a few years already. Of course, others have their own conventions and I guess one just has to get used to everyone's particular style. In fact, I would have thought by now you would have gotten used to mine.
