Blueberries and huckleberries are in the same genus, Vaccinium. There are many species in the genus. I'm familiar with a half dozen or so huckleberries. Some people call them blue berries, depending on the locale.

My comparison holds for wild huckleberries, such as oval leaf huckleberry, whose flavor excels that of the commercial blueberry (in my opinion) by a wide margin. I've picked both kinds. Commercial berries are much bigger and it is easier to pick a gallon.

My huckleberry picking buddy became very uneasy if his supply of frozen berries dropped below what he would eat in three years. He went picking every year, and could pick with both hands. He could pick three or four gallons while I picked only one. Of course, he always had a tongue check. If your tongue is purple, you get demerits. I routinely failed, being unable to resist.

Huckleberries are a staple food of bears, and are important for them to fatten up before hibernation. In a droughty year, commercial pickers cut into their supply, and if I'm not mistaken the Forest Service now withholds picking permits in such years.

Native Americans are consummate pickers. They used huckleberries in pemmican; now I think they just sell to commercial interests. Many Southeast Asian immigrants also pick for profit, and I've heard of violence over favorite picking areas.

You haven't really lived until you've had a home made huckleberry pie with vanilla ice cream.
