Virtually anybody could live on a single income if they did with the same volume of material possessions as in the 60's, including house size. Houses are 60% or so bigger, there are more autos than people, and far more "stuff" crammed into houses. Families apparently need it all and so are willing to work an extra 2000 hours a year for it.

Absolutely, price for household services has completely gone through the roof, all across the economy. Or work output/dollar spent is way lower....or else you are required to do yourself what was provided for free in the past. Think of bank tellers vs ATM's, or the hoops one is required to jump through to get a prescription filled or see a doctor. All of it blissfully ignored by the CPI....the internet has been a great facilitator of this by the way.
