Frankly I would not eat shoe leather like round steak. I eat a lot of food other than meat BTW.

when CKG comes in, you will be eating Omaha Steaks meats exclusively, and ordering your Maine lobsters flown in daily via FedEx

Agreed.... but the fact is food is dirt cheap. For the 'real' price of food try and go buy LOCAL organic produce. You're getting closer to the truth... if you can find any. What we call "food" wasn't even in existance 50 years ago... so it's a slippery slope.

Mish I find that answer to me quite offensive. Frankly I would not eat shoe leather like round steak. I eat a lot of food other than meat BTW.

I apologize for the tone of my answer but judging inflation by the price of Filets is just not going to cut it.
Food prices have at worst tripled over 30 years or so.

A head of lettuce is what now? .98
What was it 30 years ago? .19 I believe
OK that is 5 times increase over 30 years.

How much have car prices gone up in that timeframe?
House prices?
Land prices?

Take a look at corn prices or wheat prices or soybean prices.
Rock bottom.

In the summer I can get fresh picked corn at farmstands in Wisconsin for .10 an ear. Huge ears too. What were they 30 years ago? .05 an ear perhaps? Or has the price even moved?!!
I simply do not remember.

Now if you buy pears at Harry & Davids or mail order fruits of any kind, yeah you are gonna see some huge price increases.

The fact that you are eating Filets tells me you are doing very well for yourself so congratulations. I remain steadfast however that food is a veritable bargain compared to most other things. As for round steak, I happen to like it. Get a thick one (it is called swiss steak then) and cook it long and slow and it make a great "pot roast" kinda dinner.

Pepsi 8 pack bottle on sale for .99 30 years ago. That was the sale price the rock bottom cheapest you coud get... regular price was 1.69. And you had to mess with bottles. Anyway that is 128 oz for .99
Now I can get all kinds of canned pop (squirt, diet orange crush, lemonaid, pepsi, coke, good brands...) a 12 pack of 12 oz for 2.50 sometimes $2. Lets call it 2.50 cause 2.00 is rare.
That is 144 oz for 2.50 vs 128 oz for .99. Is that a huge difference over 30 years? You tell me. Back then squirt was never on sale. 6 pack cans were $1.59 -1.79. Hardly any increase at all. In fact it is CHEAPER now at a 12 pack for $2.50.

30 pack of miller lite: on sale every week at jewel for about $13. That is $2.60 a six pack. What was it 30 years ago? On this I actually have no idea as we did not sell beer at any of the three places I worked. If it has more than doubled I will be quite surprised.

People bitch when steaks go up and chicken goes down. Then they bitch when chicken goes up and pork goes down. Then they bitch when ham goes up and steaks go down. Then they bitch when pork goes up and chicken goes down. Almost all of this stuff cycles. Buy what is on sale and freeze it.

My wife bought some Marie Collander chicken pot pies yesterday. An 8 pack for $4 or so. 50 cents a piece. They are not bad pot pies either. Much better than Banquet. 50 cents for a prepared meal. If one is not enough food then eat two of them. Or have a salad with it.

People bitching about food prices touches a nerve because I think one can eat pretty well for cheap. BTW I bought a couple prime rib roasts for 3.98 lb recently. Want steaks? Have them slice it for free. Rib steaks for $3.98 lb. Is a filet that much better at $8-12 lb? Unfortunately I do not remember the price of rib steaks 30 years ago. I seem to recall rib eyes at about $1.79 so perhaps a rib steak was $1.39 (some how that seems low as I know for sure we were losing on round steak at .99). That's right, round steak at .99 was a loss leader 30 yrs ago. We ran that sale every few weeks or so at K-mart foods and the meat dept hated it! They were not thrilled at selling chickens at .27-.29 lb either. I do recall one blowout where chickens were at .19 lb but that ran only once so I discount it. people were coming from everywhere to get those chickens for .19 lb! It was a huge sale day. We were swamped. I had a farmer come in to buy some. He told me he could not raise them for that price.

It pays to know prices. I was at costco just yesterday. My wife has the card not me so I seldom go there. Their meat prices are atrocious! Chuck steak was $3 a lb. For that price they labeled it "prime" but does it really matter with chuck steak? Now there's a genuine bitch. Chuck steak 30 yrs ago was .69 lb or so. Perhaps .49 on sale. So $3 for that is outrageous. However Mejier has had it on sale recently for close to $1 lb. Do not recall the exact price. Perhaps it was even lower. Perhaps it was $1.29. (if so there is that 2-3 times things again over 30 yrs). At any rate, there was NOTHING - NO MEAT on sale at costco. What a ripoff. They suck you in with cheap kleenex or whatever so you save .10 on that and give up $1 lb on meat. Phooey.

Hopefully I made my point but more importantly I will apologize again for my original tone. It was not called for.
