Laz, Statistically speaking, you are correct. There are many, MANY exceptions to the rule, and we exceptions balk. The question is: who is going to hear us? Another and more important question is: how many of us will be misdiagnosed (and medically "treated" accordingly) because we do not fit into all those preconceived or preplanned pigeon holes? - Holly

If you tax them, inevitably somebody wants to tax them disproportionately.

There is a difference between not having a cigarette tax or an alcohol tax, and giving cigarettes and alcohol (and other things) special breaks so the companies don't pay corporate income taxes and the consumers don't pay sales taxes on those items. Giving out special breaks distorts the economy, provides an artificial inventive for growth in the "sin" products and if anything encourages a backlash that will get the exemption removed and extra taxes added. The best way to avoid special taxes is to consistently push the idea that the government should be neutral in such things.
