Back in the 20's was a different world than we have today.

Waikiki exists because a canal was built behind the present strand to drain the area. It was a mosquito infested swamp. When Mark Twain was here, he joked that everytime he sat down, he killed a million mosquitoes.

So they built the Ali Wai canal in the 20's and created the greatest playground in the world. I sit here with my sliding door open to the lanai, no screens, and no bugs, period. A combination of the draining and the trades keeps the flies away.

This map shows the area now. The "Star" is where I live, a block off the beach. mapquest.com
