Fibre Channel Ready 4.25 Gbps Media Cross-Connect With 288 Ports Ideal for Test and Network Lab Environments

CHATSWORTH, Calif., March 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- MRV Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq: MRVC - News), a leading provider of scalable network infrastructure equipment, today announced the addition of a new member to its line of Physical Layer Cross-Connect Switches: the 288 port Media Cross-Connect (NC316-288PMC-4). The NC316-288PMC-4 will enable testing and interoperability storage labs to extend their automated testing capabilities to the highest density of ports supporting per port speeds from 0 to 4.2Gbps. The Media Cross-Connect is based on the Open and Flexible Linux Operating System with a new Network Management card that focuses on secure access.

The programmable NC316-144PMC-4 digital cross-connect permits any port to any port connectivity using various I/O interfaces and delivering per port bandwidth up to 4.25 Gbps. With an impressive overall system bandwidth that exceeds 2 Terabit per second, the NC316-144PMC-4 transparently supports any combination of communication protocols, including SONET (OC-3 to OC-48), Ethernet (10/100/1000), Fibre Channel (1/2/4), iSCSI, Firewire (1394A/B), SDI and HD-SDI, T1/E1/J1, 10 Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel and even proprietary protocols.

"The NC316-288PMC-4 proves again MRV's focus to provide the best industry solution while preserving the customer investment and minimizing its inventory," stated Noam Lotan, President and CEO of MRV Communications. "We are extremely proud of our offerings in the network lab and test market. There is no doubt that the NC316-288PMC-4 provides interoperability labs and enterprise customers the easiest and natural migration path to higher density physical layer switching solutions."

Complimenting MRV's extensive family of physical layer cross-connect switches, which includes 32, 34, 72 and 144 port systems, the NC316-288PMC-4 raises the bar even further for what a programmable digital cross-connect can do, while preserving the customer's investment. Just a few of the possible applications for the versatile Media Cross-Connect family include: testing and interoperability labs, enterprise networks that combine LAN and SAN with wire once capabilities, digital video distribution (using MRV's patent pending SDI SFPs), and CWDM / DWDM solutions. It provides a fast return on investment (ROI) by allowing its users not just wiring flexibility, but also the capability to share expensive testing and monitoring equipment in testing environments or in enterprise networks.

The compact and modular design of the NC316-288PMC-4 platform requires only 9U of rack space. The NC316-288PMC-4 can be configured with up to four hot-swappable power supplies and with up to eight hot-swappable blades of 36 interfaces each, providing unprecedented scalability to match network growth. MRV's new design is the only design in the market that is backwards and forwards compatible, enabling customers to use the same hot-swappable power supplies and the same hot-swappable blades as the ones used in the whole Media Cross Connect family. The usage of the same power supplies and interface blades as the other family members, protect the customer investment and inventory and ease the transition to higher density systems.

MRV also announces the release of its new hot-swappable Media Cross Connect Network Management Card. Based on the Open and Flexible Linux Operating System, the new Network Management card focuses on secure access and improved management capabilities. The EM316LNXNM-MCC offers advanced features like IP and SNMPv3, multiple SSH or optional Telnet sessions, editable configuration in ASCII format, standard file transfer based configuration upload and download, script saving in the card's file system, and many more. As it manages the core of a lab or the wiring center of an enterprise the EM316LNXNM-MCC offers sophisticated system logging capabilities (SYSLOG) and is able to send SNMP trap or E-MAIL upon events occurrence. Focused on connectivity automation management the EM316LNXNM-MCC is naturally script enabled, with its industry standard Cisco Systems (R) like Console Line Interface (CLI) accessible through the serial console and through in band multiple SSH/Telnet sessions.

In order to ease out-of-box system access the EM316LNXNM comes with built in Java based Graphical Web Management accessible from any OS Web Browser. The Graphical Web Management is identical with and complements MRV's premier network management system (NMS) -- MegaVision Pro(TM).
