Natural gas aka methane. <What was the feedstock for your California methanol concept? > There was lots of it in Jay's beloved Trinidad-Tobago, not to mention other places. There still is.

Plus, there was already some methanol being produced by plants such as that in Waitara in New Zealand. One starts small, buying ready-made methanol.

There was no shortage of prospective methanol supplies. It was cheap. It was even being converted to petrol aka gasoline in the Syngas plant in New Zealand, which was a wasteful step and was eventually shut down when methanol prices improved.
