A lot of people thought that was the case during the West Coast energy crisis. Little by little, the evidence of energy market manipulation is piling into a mountain range big enough to run from the Mexican border to Canada. Now, even federal energy regulators seem to be taking the indications of massive economic crime seriously. On Tuesday, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission released new conversations involving Enron Corp. traders. A FERC economist said the review of nearly 1,500 discussions "may have only scratched the surface" of potential evidence of manipulation. The commission never checked into the tapes until it was forced to turn them over to the Snohomish County Public Utility District. The PUD's earlier releases of some transcripts and prodding by Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., pressured FERC itself to start reviewing the tapes. Even so, the commission, the Bush administration and much of the Republican Congress still dream of more energy market deregulation, which led to the 2000-01 crisis. What the West Coast and the country need is for FERC to enforce the rules, bring justice for ratepayers and finally free Snohomish and other utilities from contracts with Enron signed in the middle of the crisis. FERC says it is following legal processes that will take time. The end result must be a federal government that finally acts aggressively on evidence of what everyone but President Bush, Dick Cheney, Tom DeLay and other Enron pals suspected from the start.seattlepi.nwsource.com
