We've been meddling for over 50 years... what do you think got us in this mess? You think they hate us 'cause we left them alone?

What do you call the state propaganda machines, madrassahs, and mosques, and radical clerics all spewing their hate propaganda? Don't you agree that when people grow up with hate, they find it difficult to reverse course and find a way out?

And do you think this hate came out of thin air......magically?

Look what happened in the U.S. You couldn't teach the South that slavery was wrong. We had to reconquer the South and force them to end slavery. Then the next generations to come were taught that slavery was wrong.

Not so fast............

"The war was on in earnest. Ironically, the combination of political events, southern pride, and willfulness succeeded in paving the way to the abolition of slavery; a condition that no combination of legal action on the part of the most virulent abolitionist could possibly have accomplished."

This war was started over the issue of regionalism and state's rights.....remember we are a republic.......and which region was to predominate in the new nation. Slavery was the catalyst that caused the issue to come to the surface, but it was not the reason for the war just as the spread of democracy is not the reason we invaded Iraq. In fact, few northern states allowed black men to be free and slavery was legal in all 13 founding states right up to the civil war.

Same thing applies in the Middle East. The way to break the cycle is what we are doing now. You plant Democracy in the heart of the Arab world and get the ball rolling, then you adopt new more equitable policies towards Arabs, and then over the next century, you hope to reconcile with future generations and show them that the West isn't so bad after all.

The same theory was used to try and turn around bad neighborhoods in cities in the US. Fix a few buildings in the center and watch it spread to other parts of the neighborhood. It didn't work with cities, and I doubt that it will work in the ME.

BTW some of those neighborhoods did turn around eventually........much later than the Feds had hoped. Do you know how?

This is the way out. But your method of staying home and doing nothing is a recipe for more of the same that we've had for 50 years.

That's not what I am recommending.
