In fairness to them, they were only planning a long term burial in fossil hydrocarbons. Cars weren't invented then.

But the plants did have the remarkable foresight to make themselves fermentable, with various bugs providing the fermenting services, to give ethanol, which is good for vehicle fuel, not to mention drinking while driving [the car doing the driving using gpsOne and CDMA cyberspace and photonic/electronic/magnetic control systems, leaving the people to quaff a wine or three while cerfing cyberspace during the trip].
