I think it is largely due to the artist's position. The vast majority have no problem with it. Some songs have been scrubbed off the internet though. One example would be an old environmental song by "Spirit" called "Fresh Garbage." It was their biggest hit and many of their other songs lyrics are available. I have considered transcribing a few songs I couldn't find, but decided against it.

I just realized where you were going with this due to your recording business. Along those lines, I can tell you that a music director at a church I used to attend made the point of telling the congregation the church paid for all the sheet music used. So many churches these days just use an overhead projector to flash the lyrics of hymns onto a screen.
