I agree with the above, but I think the parties that are opposed to "gay marriage" have more in mind than just the word "marriage". I don't actually have a strong view on it either way, but I'm trying to understand what people mean when they say they support gay civil unions but not gay marriage. I think they are the same thing (other than the vocabulary), and if so I don't see what all the fuss is about.

I agree with you here. But likewise I suspect, that the gay people making the biggest noise about this issue have more in mind than just equal terms with a married couple of man and woman and would never settle for anything short of the term "marriage"...
