Saddam Hussein, is just one of several examples of the type of intervention we have perpetrated in the ME over the past 50 years that has engendered the hatred of millions of Arabs and Muslims.

Nonsense. You are forgetting that in the early 1980's the US's choice of allies in the ME was the revolutionary leadership in Iran which had earlier occupied the US embassy and held Americans hostage for 400+ days,

Huh? Go back and read your history. We supported the Shah. We were diametrically opposed to the Ayatollah that took over from him. We did everything we could to undermine his regime.

the royal family in Saudi Arabia which promotes Wahhabism and denies their own people basic freedom (like the right for a woman to leave her own friggin' house!), Bashar's dad in Syria who routinely kidnapped and killed his political opponents, and Saddam who hated the Iranians as much as Americans did.

You are contradicting yourself. In any case, we supported some of the worst tyrants in the world in the name of oil. I think that might explain why Muslims harbor some hatred towards the US. That was my original point.

Given those options, and the need to choose in order to reduce Soviet influence in the region, Saddam didn't look too bad. The only alternative to suporting Saddam would be to regime-change all four countries, and I somehow doubt you would have been in favor of that!
