I've heard conflicting reports from credible sources that what is actually occurring is that the U.S. military is starting to coalesce at present into four major permanent military bases. Bases which were part of the Ba'athist Army's system in the old days. The Americans are engaged less in patrolling the dangerous areas of urban centers and are being held back more as a strategic reserve.

In addition to these four, the military is constructing as many as ten additional permanent military bases stategically located throughout Iraq.

Anyone who believes the rhetoric about the U.S. pulling out of Iraq anytime soon is hopelessly pollyannish.
