Another thing that hits me is the assumption that young muslims are religious. The MSM feature the one's that are. But I think the one's we see in our colleges are just about as secular as our kids are.


One angle that several people have played with (I think Bernard Lewis was one, but not sure), is that Islamism isn't a function of the great amount of Muslim piety running around - to the contrary, it is a modern backlash against unbelief, turning unbelief into fanatical political belief. One could argue that Marxism and Fascism functioned the same way in Europe. People who make this argument say its no surprise that some of the strongest adherents became radicalized in the West.
