Somewhere deep in most Americans is the belief that Woodrow Wilson's 14 Points (at least about nationalism and freedom) was correct. That, had America's allies in the First World War actually let Wilson's proposal succeed, the Second World War (the war against Fascism), the Cold War (the war against Communism), the enslavement of Eastern Europe by the Soviet Union, and the problems in the Middle East could all have been avoided.

It seems only Reagan and Bush (and to a lesser degree, Clinton) had the courage to actually try and full fill Wilson's dream of self determination - even if it meant going it alone without traditional European Allies.
