his UCLA team mate broke the color barrier and was signed by the Los Angeles Rams.

I was at SMU in 1952 when Georgia Tech came to Dallas to play them with a black running back. It was the talk of the campus all week, and the game had a lot of "get him," yells.

find it interesting that at roughly the same time (slightly before, I think) Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball, his UCLA team mate broke the color barrier and was signed by the Los Angeles Rams.

But the NFL was a small league representing a small (if growing) sport. Professional Football did not have the media presence that Baseball did in that era. It was the NHL of that time :-)
