It has gotten pretty bad in the corporate and government world. It used to be enough to live and let live but now that doesn't make the cut, in order to be deemed acceptable you have to "value diversity" and managers get evaluated on the commitment they show towards valuing diversity. It's not even a left-wing thing anymore, it's everywhere. So if a guy who speaks with a lisp calls you an asshole and you return fire by calling him a fag, it's your ass that is in the sling for failing to sufficiently value diversity.
