Robusta Coffee Prices Rise in Tokyo: World's Biggest Mover
Feb. 24 (Bloomberg) -- Coffee in Tokyo rose, the biggest fluctuation of any commodity market today, as processors increased purchases on speculation smaller harvests in Brazil and Vietnam may cause prices to gain later this year.

Prices for Robusta coffee, the type used by Nestle SA, Procter & Gamble Co. and other instant-coffee makers, are up 48 percent in the past four months on the Tokyo Grain Exchange. Prices reached a two-year high on Feb. 17 amid concern global demand will exceed production. Prices for Arabica beans, favored by specialty coffee roasters, are up 79 percent since Oct. 23.

``There will be a shortage of 3-4 four million bags of coffee, mainly of Arabica'' globally this year, said Manish Dharwan, who trades coffee as head of Olam International Ltd. in Vietnam. Roasters are rushing to buy because they didn't expect the market to go up so soon, he said.
