Ah, I figured it was a strategy to deflect some of the VietNam era grief and rhetoric over events that included spitting on the faces of soldiers and calling them baby killers and such ... as that became identified with anti-war protesters from the left.

I think I am right too but I can tell you are stuck on this one so let's move on. The idea is to clarify not to entrench.

So, when the anti-war left says it, they are expressing genuine caring for the men and women in uniform, but when someone supportive of Bush's Iraq policy says it, they are expressing contempt for others' right to dissent? LOL. Nice rationalization.
