John,

I think this time is going to be different. (didn't some famous fed chairman said that?) <gggg>

On the negative side, I would say that our biggest problem is the leadership. Democrats or Republicans, I don't see many that are really qualified, or have the will to do the right things. However, I think this is fixable. When we finally fall apart, the true leaders will be forced to step forward.

On the negative side, the asset bubbles of first equity then real estate have created a nation of lazy people. Those who are smart enough to benefit from the bubbles are now buying Toll Brothers McMansions and not working hard to build the nation. What's left are a bunch of service workers and health care workers to cater to these fortunate people.

On the negative side, corporate America has been hollowed out. Everything that we used to be good at has been outsourced. We still have weapons and Boeing. What else? Looking around my house, I can't see anything that is Made in USA.

On the positive side, we are still the land of plenty. We still have a big educated class. May be all we need is a bang on the head by a 2X4 to shake off all the cobwebs?

I have not done a round the world tour in a yellow Mercedes like Jimmy but I do enjoy travelling. Looking at how screwed up other countries are gave me that last hope for this country.

So while I do think that we are not leaving our children a better country/world that we lived in, I am not sure if I would go as far as "depression".
