I doubt that the 'spoiler' role alone is what they will be remembered for.

The duopololy we have had in recent decades is quite unusual.

It reminds me of the PRI domination of Mexico for 80 years (only with an oligopoly of 2 instead of a monopoly of 1).

It tends to stifle new ideas in politics... and leaves both sides of the 'Republicrats' scrambling (each time they are in power) to shovel-out the most favors to their bases.
