Though I'm sure many people actually ARE patriotic, as opposed to only "wishing to appear" so, I'm inclined to agree as the tone or context often implies "...and you don't."

I agree. There is no doubt that most people are very patriotic. Loyalty to one's national heritage is certainly a very good value for us to hold. We are at a point where we are faced with some values conflicts that may be defined differently depending upon the political camp you are situated within.

During the American Revolutionary war loyalty to national heritage vs loyalty to the new world of American states was a primary values conflict for Americans.

"It is about as self-serving a statement as a person could make."

I questioned it because at the start of the war it became a slogan for the left. Slogan's that run attached to another statement starting with 'but' are always suspect. The reaction I get when pointing that out to zealots like GST pretty much accentuates that point.
