One night my husband was on a flight back from somewhere, and he was reading a book about WWII that he had gotten from his parents' bookshelves. In the margin of a chapter on a certain battle was written "I was there" in his father's hand. The next time we were at their home, he asked his dad about it. Now his dad has had several strokes and isn;t terribly with it. In addition, he has never talked about his experiences in the war. We knew vaguely that he had landed a day or two after the first Normandy Invasion and been wounded not too long afterward. But for some reason, this little margin note set off a detailed reminiscence. This was the battle in which his father was shot twice and left for dead, finally being found after lying for hours in a ditch. He lost his leg, but survived. He spoke in detail and coherently and very very movingly. It was a special moment for my husband and for one of our sons who was there with us. And all because of a little margin note. So maybe writing in books isn't always bad.

I didn't know Lenin wrote under his original name [every day she learns something] think of everything I don't know! the books I miss and I rummage through shelves and piles! it is harder and harder to find reasonably priced older books with titles that have any value still, it's the searching that's fun when the da vinci code first hit the stand and I read it, I immediately browsed and bought first editions of all his previous books pat me on the back if you like that genre, 'rule of four' is even better
